The historical development of Islamic art and the variations of different geographical regions are surveyed. This description may be from another edition of this product.
The book covers Islamic art in almost all parts of what is generally called the 'Islamic world' The middle east, Spain (Andalusia) Turkey, Iran, India and Central Asia. The book however, does not cover Java, South East Asia, Sub Saharan Africa (which may be a good thing as for one, I am sick of the endless pictures of nothing more than the grand Mosque in Timbuktoo as though that is the be all and end all of African Islamic art) Extensive pictures both in black and white and colour of both Mosques, carpets, palaces and works of art such as pottery. The pictures cover the time periods of early Ummayads and Abbasids, Musim spain, the Seljuqs and Ottomans (Though nothing of the Balkans or Southern Russia) The Safavids and the Moghuls of India, the Tatars and Timur of Central Asia. Of interest to anyone who wants to know a little about Islamic art, the styles used and some of the meaing behind the artwork. For something a bit more detailed you may want to look at "Islamic art and Spirituality" but this may be an interesting little start.
