this is the best intro java book i've read. it has been invaluble to me it paints such a clear picture, and teaches oo sweetly, buy this and use it in conjunction with bruce eckels book and i promise you will have bulletproof oo fundamentals with which to build on

TWO THUMBS UP

I was new to Java when I started reading this book; but i had some good procedural background; So I found this book to be an excellent resource of info. It covers ropics starting from selection and iteration structures, arrays, vectors, etc, to recursion and inheritance. Very comprehensive. My only complain is that I skipped some exercises. Many of them require you to modify tedious codes developed in privious chapters; so if you do not go chapter by chapter, some exercises don't make sense. Also I wish recursion was covered in more detail with more examples, cause i find it rather difficult and wish more was devoted to it.And if the answers to exercises were available it would be nice too. But then, you know when you get it right when you actually compile it , so don't worry about it too much. So, overall , a great welcome for newcommers to Java.Highly recommend.

This is a great introduction to OOP

I really enjoyed this book. I am an unschooled "practical programmer," and OOP has been pretty much a mystery to me. I understand the concepts and examples when I see them, but haven't really thought in an object oriented way when I write my own code. This is the book that finally got me actually thinking and designing in objects. The explanations are splendidly clear and thorough. (The section on "recursion," to take one example, is inspired!) I recommend this book highly. It would be a good introduction to Java, or, as in my case, a great way to learn more about programming principles even if you have some experience with Java already.

A MUST for procedural programmers and beginners.

I have been programming in procedural languages for over 13 years and lately I have been trying to learn Java & OOP. I read "Learn Java in 21 days" but I still didn't understand OOP. This is the book that made me "get it". I found the explanations and exercises in this book outstanding! I have a few other Java books and I have read parts of other on-line books but this one explains OOP the best. Even with many years of programming experience, I found OOP difficult to grasp. This book not only helps you understand what objects are but it shows you how to design them. Other than OOP, the book does a good job of explaining basic programming concepts such as conditions, loops, recursion, etc. The book is designed so that these chapters can be skipped if you are familiar with the subjects but I read them anyway and found them interesting. I think the book gives beginners a big head start by explaning not only how things like loops work, but how to design them and why. So if you are a procedural programmer, I think this book is a MUST HAVE. I also think it would be a great start for beginners.

Excellent Introduction to Programming/Java

This is a first-rate introduction to computer programming using Java as a focus. The authors' prose is clear and precise and the examples illustrate each feature of the language very well. Helpful exercises are included every few pages and these are nicely coordinated with the examples.
