Bernard Gotfryd was a staff photographer for Newsweek magazine for more than three decades from the mid-1950s to the late 1980s. These are his portraits of many of the most influential and important people of the day, including novelists, poets, politicians, film stars, performing artists, painters, and sculptors. Usually given only a limited amount of time, Gotfryd made a virtue of necessity and relied on natural light only, without a flash and with few props. As a result, his style is clear, simple, and direct. The portraits themselves are honest and revealing.
