Intimacy

I've now read Intimacy three times, and the emotional power of this novel simply doesn't diminish. You want to reach into the pages and pull the pain out, embrace its main character, the smart, struggling, lonely, Cecilia. Instead, you walk with her as she nearly drowns in her desparate attempts to love, connect, survive. New Yorker writer Jane Kramer probably said it best in her review of this book: "This is wonderful writing_prose as measured and secure as poetry, a voice that nver misses its own entirely eccentric bea. And it makes a wonderful, strange, steely, delicate novel. ...It is a deadpan howl, a game of cat and mouse betwen life and desire.And it is full of surprises. The first thing I did when I finished Intimacy ws to start reading it again.
