Inklings

"The Inklings" is a charming coming of age story set in Oxford in the early 1960's. It concerns a young lady who is an American student spending a year abroad studying at Oxford. There are references to C S Lewis, the great Christian writer, and thoughtful remarks about his work. It is also a very sweet love story, in which values and virtue matter. The point of clarification that I would like to make is that this is a recent reprint of the original novel (originally published a few years ago) and--importantly--a sequel is also part of this printing. Hence you get two novels.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I read it within a day, once I started reading I did not want to put it down.The book is set in Oxford, England, I am self was able to visit England about a year and a half ago and I believe this even made the book more enjoyable.I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the The Oxford Chronicles by Melanie.

I wasn't sure what I was going to get when I started reading Inklings. Romance is not exactly my thing, I'm more the fantasic creatures and loud explosion type of person. Well, I've just finished it, and it surprised me. Not just for it being a great read that I found hard to put down, but that I got so involved in the story, and identified so strongly with the characters. By the end of the book, I really identified with all the characters except one - but he's the villan, so that's OK.What surprised me most was that a good kiwi bloke such as myself, identified so strongly with Kate. I felt her joy and her pain keenly, and I really felt I got inside her head and feelings. The characters are very believable and the situations real - something that is often missing from Christian fiction. That not only makes it a good novel, but potentially great for teens - both a positive view of Christianity, but also as a cautionary tale for those beginning to get involved with romantic relationship.Melanie Jeschke has done a fine job on her first novel, and it pleases me greatly that this is part one of a series, I really can't wait for the next book!

Review of second book--"Intentions" Melanie's new publisher included her first book, "Inklings", with her second book "Intentions". (Both books are in the Oxford Chronicles named "Inklings".) Now you get two books for the price of one! "Intentions" continues the tale of the heroine, Kate, and her romance with David. The Christian ethics that you read about could be a good role model for teens. Melanie's descriptions are accurate and believable of Oxford life. A good read! Review of 1st book--Inklings What a wonderful first novel that this talented author has written! I found it to be a quick, yet delightful read! Of high interest to me was life in Oxford and British traditions. The Anglo-Oxford/American Glossary that the author included was most helpful. While Christians will relate most fully to some of the beliefs that are set forth, people of all faiths will enjoy and relate to the romantic triangle that the heroine, Kate, finds herself entwined. Christian beliefs and ideals were portrayed through some of the characters, and biblical references were quoted throughout the book. I look forward eagerly to the sequel to Inklings, Book One of The Oxford Chronicles!
