Very Nice Woodland Stories!

I am very impressed with the author. Her stories are very nice and children really enjoy them. I saw her at a book fair not too long ago. A very talented author.

cute!

It's a real cute book, soooo sweet. I like it a lot. It explains why things are without having a religious touch. I wish I had read it when I was younger!

A Book for people Who Love the Woods and Wild Things

It was a joy to find this book and share it with my grandchildren. So many of their books are here-today, gone-tomorrow. This one is a keeper. The stories are original and clever, full of humor and imagination as well as real details about the animals. I was thrilled when it mentioned that skunk's eyes glow amber in the dark! I don't know why nobody before has written a story about why Mountain Lion's tail is long, but Bobcat and Lynx have short tails--but it's about time someone did! I think it's important for kids to realize that this sort of story is part of everyone's cultural heritage and they can keep the tradition alive. (Alli told me that she thinks tiger got his stripes when he was sucked up in a tornado. I didn't know what she meant until she drew me a picture of the tornado with all its cork-screw-like black lines--just like tiger!) We also loved the illustrations. I think children like realistic pictures more than adults realize. It's nice to see animals looking like themselves, not slick, commercial approximations. Beckhorn's slightly quirky style fairly glows. Her love and knowledge of the critters is obvious, as well as her sense of fun. Grammy Snapping Turtle an unforgettable old crone! I like to provide the children with good, accurate non-fiction books about nature, but I think they also need good fiction to help instill in them a love of the woods and wild things. With the exception of Jean George and Gary Paulson, that can be hard to find. As a wise man once said, "In the end, we will save what we love and understand." This book will help children fall in love with that which we must preserve. It's my hope that they will keep it to share with their own grandchildren one day.

great book to share with your kids

A sweet book in a world that seems so full of space aliens and action figures with guns. "Answers" those wonderful questions we all had as children... and that our children now ask of us. Beautiful illustrations. A pleasure to share with my kids.
