Five Stars for the book and the author

This is a wonderful book. What made it even more meaningful to me was the opportunity to talk briefly with the author. I know for sure that I was extremely fortunate to talk to him in what is the smallest Books A Million in the US on a November Saturday nite. One day those of us who have talked to him about this book will be able to say "we knew him way back when." He is certainly destined for a great future as a writer if this book is any indication. Thanks, Mr. Rhodes, for a truly great book.

A book you just cannot put down, from beginning to end

From Chapter One you begin to understand the struggles of a young boy caught up in the Civil War. Through many devastating events John Warren searches for answers, holds tight to his values and passes them to those around him. Guided by very interesting characters and the challenges of the Okefenokee Swamp, he becomes a great man living in difficult times. I cannot wait for the next book.

I found this to be an entertaining and well written book.

The characters in this book are so beautifully crafted, it's hard to remember that these are not real people. Anyone who has spent time in the South should have memories of encounters or observations of real versions of John Warren, Corey Stokes or the sleazy Ned Worthington. This is a book I wished would not end so I could continue reading about these fascinating people and their lives. It's obvious that this book was written from the heart which is a gift to all of us.

I am (im)patiently waiting for his next book!!

This is a great book. The Civil War is not glamorized and the characters are real people just trying to exist and adapt to a very different way of life. I especially like the bond between the black and white families. Perhaps we could all learn from this story. It sounds as though there will be a sequel. I sure hope so!

an exciting story, full of accurate, Southern reality

IN MY FATHER'S GENERATION starts in the Battle of Atlanta and moves quickly to the post war life of deep South Georgia. The main character, John Warren,is followed as he climbs from bare existence as a 15 year old orphan to the pinnacle of sucess and influence. He is continually confronted by the challenges of the strange, primitive environment and cultural paranoia of Clinch County, Georgia,in the 1860's. The reader is allowed to live along side John's family and the family of his black friend, Corey Stokes, as they struggle through the late 1800's and early 1900's.As with all novels, that compel one's attention, this one has ever detail just like it really was and is. It is an exciting story, filled with action that is so real it requires no exaggeration. It should make a heck of a movie.
