I'm Glad My Mom Died

Never have I demolished a book so quickly yet savored every word. I don’t think I can say anything but hasn’t already been said but W O W this book resonated so deeply with me, it even gave me nightmares about my own overbearing mother. I really identified with this book and I’m eternally grateful to Jeannette for letting us into her life. 10 stars

This book was written well. I found nothing in it to be funny even with my dark sense of humor. I was not able to read it through ti the end but did read over half way, waiting for some humor in it all. I felt like it was a constant whine-fest and it just droned on and on about how terrible her life felt. I didn’t laugh about it one time which is what I was hoping for since I can often relate to an insane mother’s influences.

& glad that she got to write her story

I loved the story line in this book however the story was nothing like I would have imagined her life being like. It's so sad about how these young actors and actresses are abused in real life. SAD!

This was such an addicting read. I couldn't bring myself to put it down. It's so raw and utterly human that I couldn't get enough of it even though it is so painful at the same time. I hope Jennette gets better

Such a relatable story. She told the story very well and honestly without leading you to feel a certain way.

This book is so well written and covers such tough topics in a approachable and funny way. Hands down one of the best books I've read.

I never really liked reading but this book definitely broke that for me! It's an unbelievable story of her childhood. It has trauma and drama and you definitely don't wanna put the book down!

And incredibly horrifying story. I could not put it down. It’s very relatable, even to those who have not been forced into stardom by a pushy mother who mentally manipulated them. A very human story, most people with a mother will find someway to relate to.

This book is everything. It connected and made me feel seen with the complex relationship as well as the work to heal from it. This will be two Christmas gifts this year. Would love to send it to my therapist and have a discussion on generational trauma.

My "mother" had no aspirations for me, but she blamed me for everything that went wrong in her life. I was the first born, and even at age 5, I remember her telling me "if it hadn't been for you, I would have never married @@@@". For years, I never understood why it was my fault. At age 12, I finally learned from a drunk @@@@ that he was not my father. He was "boohooing" that my mother had just up and walked off leaving 7 kids behind. She had been disappearing for several years... a couple of days at first, then gradually a week at a time, then a month at a time, finally she just left. The other kids (all younger were adopted out to different families) but I was a teenage then (13) so was told I was basically unadoptable. @@@@ was in jail (constantly drunk) so I decided to "hit the road". Long story short, 18 months later I was picked up by the cops for not being in school, sent to an orphanage (they didn't know anything about me), I graduated, went to college, got my degrees, etc. I've been married almost 55 years now to a beautiful understanding wife, and we have two grown daughters who never knew anyone from my side of the family (thank goodness). I know what Jennette must have experienced to some degree, but we all react differently. I'm glad she found help, made it through that tunnel, and thank her for sharing her story so others can learn.

Jennette McCurdy's book will keep you turning the page from cover to cover. It's beautifully written, starting out sounding like a child's narrative then growing into an adult voice. Having grown up with some of the shows McCurdy starred in, this was a glimpse into the other side of that world-- the one beyond the TV screen. Anyone who reads this should be prepared to go through so many emotions: pain, confusion, curiosity, and more. I highly recommend this book.

I love Jeanette's writing and how she captures her experiences.

McCurdy captures her memoir in a way that makes enjoyable to read. The short chapters and humorous tone are what make this book perfect. I’m able to relate to her in so many ways that keep me from feeling alone in my own situation. I recommend this book to anyone regardless of your relation with your parents.
