Illustrating Fashion: Concept to Creation

I am intrested in fashion design and this book has helped me to learn how to draw the figure and face, etc. If you are a beginner in fashion design this should be your first book to get. This book is a keeper!!

This book is a great resource for anyone who wants to learn figure drawing and clothing. I am studying costume design and found this book to be a great help to me though it is written for fashion illustration. He shows how to draw the basic figure and head as well as other details such as patterns and knits. There is even a chapter on Jewelry! When I recieved it I was pleased to find that it is a well-bound sturdy (text)book that will survive frequent use and reference on my desk. Though there aren't any color drawings or examples (you will have to find another place to learn about painting and such) this a fantastic book that includes everything else. Another reviewer pointed out that all of the drawings in this book are from the author, which is maybe a bit disappointing, but you don't have to look very far to find other books or magazines with examples. Though these few things are missing, this book has everything that you need to know to draw the fashion figure, especially if you already have some experience with the art media you wish to use.

Before buying this book, I had already bought 3 other about fashion illustration, but I'm sure that this one is the best, if you want to learn or improve your fashion drawings. Steven S. explains everything you need to know about this subject, from basic lessons to the more elaborated. Every lesson is illustrated with his own drawings, but he is not tendential. He teaches you everything you need to know and also helps you to develop your own style. After I finished this book, I became proud of my drawings and my work got even more valuable.

I am currently working on my portfolio to get into fashion design and I needed help with the illustration part. I ordered this book because it seemed to be what I needed...So I got the book in the mail, I flipped through the book quickly, I was very dissappointed that it wasn't in color. Anyway, as I started reading the book, I was amazed at how much knowlegde I was gaining from this book. The fact that the book is black and white is totally irrelevant. The information that this book holds is simply astonishing.I am not completely finished with this book yet but from what I have read and worked with so far, I say this book can help anyone who is yearning to learn how to illustrate and even design fashion! If your skills need a little touching up, this book will surely improve ur style.I am currently at the Fashion Institute of Technology (2/28/03) and I now have Stipelman as a instructor... If you have the chance to be taught by him, it's even better than the book.

This book is very thorough guide for students to develop their own fashion illustration. His illustrations are excellent and detailed examples of apparel parts are priceless. The only thing lack in this book is showing different illustration styles of other artists (which do not make the quality of the book any less). I highly recommend this book for everybody who is interested in fashion drawing.
