A biography of the black woman from a prosperous Philadelphia family who devoted herself to educating newly freed slaves after the Civil War. This description may be from another edition of this product.
This is a biographical work based on Charlotte Forten's diary. She was indeed a free-born black and she met and mingled with many famous abolitionists. This book is good, but I wouldn't recommend it for younger than ninth grade. The style is very formal and takes a bit of time to get used to. A lot can be learned, however, so it shouldn't be neglected based on the formality of the style.
