This book helped me understand my worse trauma

I read this 25 years ago when I was going through a horrible divorce. Now my only child is going through this too! I looked everywhere for my copy to give to him. Thank goodness Thrft Books came to the rescue! I am ordering a copy for myself now because I never want to be without it. My heart was healed and I have found my soulmate. We’re celebrating our 25th anniversary this year. Love truly is better the second time around.

A+ for book

Extremely helpful when you lose a loved one

I read this twice in one night when my dog passed, and many other times when I lost other loved ones. I bought two more so that I have them on hand to give away in case someone needs them.

Used this book for years for clients, self and friends.

Death, depression, illness, lose of any kind causes lack of concentration, short attention span that is why this book is so helpful. Turn to any page and get help.

This book will get you through the most painful divorce

This book is written in very small bites so that those of us who can not concentrate for more than 5 minutes at a time can get the help we need to survive the pain of divorce. There is some timely advice on one page and a poem on the facing page so that we can grieve and also know that we are not alone with these feelings. It takes us as slowly as we need to go, or as quickly. This book along with my child and my higher power saved my life when going through a very painful divorce. It is good for many kinds of loss, and is written with such understanding of the painful grieving process that it is like having the most wonderful friend to stand by you and help you through. It is worth its weight in gold, but now that it is back in print, you won't need to spend your last dime to get it. Spend the few dollars to get it, It is a blessing!

How To Survive the Loss of a Loved One

This book was written a few years ago but is still pertinent today. It's a nice short read in one sitting.

BEST BOOK ON HANDLING GRIEF

I have given this book to friends who have lost loved ones, It is for any loss, divorce, death, pets, etc It is written by a psychiatrist, a psychologist and a poet. No big high falluting words. the poems are heart felt, and allows you to grieve at your own pace. I wouldn't have survived the loss of my young husband if I hadn't had this book.Do not hesitate to buy this book. Both editions are excellent

This one really does help

I've ploughed through a spate of self-help books on this topic lately, and have written some scathing reviews; because all of them appeared to have their own agendas, and none of them seemed to help. Until I found this one. This book described to me EXACTLY what I was going through. It did not seek to reframe the experience within the author's religious views. It did not seek to impose a decision or a philosophy on me. It did not try to get me to DO anything. It simply described exactly what was happening, and it did it in a way that made it okay for me to feel the way I was feeling. The book is formatted in pairs of facing pages. On the lefthand page is straightforward prose; on the righthand pages (with a few exceptions) are short, original poems. This presentation I found extremely powerful. The poems connect in a way that the prose can't; and the prose lends strength and validity and concrete information to the fellings expressed in the poetry. The combined effect is one of knowledge and empathy. In other words, reading this book is like sitting down and talking with a wise, kind friend. The writing style is sparse yet complete. It would pass any test that E.B. White could put to it. It is, in itself, enjoyable. Reading the above, I find that my description is inadequate. If you are going through the loss of a loved one, or, in fact, any kind of a loss at all, this book will give you comfort... it will put things in perspective for you, without demeaning or trivializing your feelings, and it will leave you in a place from which you can move on. j michael rowland

Helpful for grieving spouse

I bought this book first in 1979 after the death of my spouse. I read it many times, allowing myself to cry and grieve. I found it so helpful, I have loaned it out to many other widows and purchased it for several more. If purchasing for someone else, wait a few months and then present it as a possible help to them.
