This book has been on my shelf for over 30 years, along with my 'bible' Equitation, and though I had perused it with some interest, I had no need to study it closely until recently, when I purchased a mare in foal. Written for wealthy major breeders of bloodstock in the South of England, the deeply politically incorrect passages of the book made me, a female in the middle of the mountains of Colorado, feel that this book moght not have anything to offer - but I was wrong. Mr Wynmalen shares his love of horses and remarkable depth of knowlege clearly and concisely. When it was written, horse breeding was an art, not a science, and as a consequence the chapter on nutrition only references studies done on cattle for optimum nutrition, however Mr Wynmalen lays out his feeding programme for us. I naturally rushed to the wealth of scientific information now available on the net and spent two days working out the optimum diet for my mare - balancing my calcium and potassium, my alfalfa with my Timothy hay. Was I really suprised to find that it matched Mr Wynmalens? It really is well worth a look at, especially if you are a wealthy bloodstock breeder in the South of England!
