If you want to learn hockey history, or just like the sport for visual delight, start right HERE. This is a big, thick book that covers hockey for the last 100 years. If I were playing the 70s Flyers, I would want this monster under my jersey for extra padding. The history is not narrative here. It works alongside the pictures, year by year. This won't make you a PHd in the NHL, but it will defantely give you your undergraduate degree. You'll find out about key players, key games, and yes, key fights. Who skates best? Who will knock your teeth out? The photos are big and many in giant color. You see 1920s players with laces in their jerseys, hockey during World War II. 1950s: crew cut, thick-necked, missing teeth monsters, 220lbs straight at you. 60s and 70s: helmetless players rolling down the boards, Elvis sideburns and hippie hair flying. The accrobat technicians of the 80s, 90s and 2000s are here too. The pictures are so detailed, you feel the ice's vapor. First day student or expert, go to school with this book

Bought a few for birthday gifts and then one for my 9yr old son and he doesn't like to read much, but really likes to look through this book.
