Andrew Bonar's "Heavenly Springs" is a collection of readings from various writings of Bonar gathered by his daughter, Marjory Bonar. The book is divided into 53 readings, one for each Sunday of the year.Andrew Bonar, like his brother, Horatius, was a poet, a theologian, and a pastor. He lived in the 19th Century in Scotland, and was close friends with Robert Murray M'Cheyne, and collected his memiors, and put together his biography. Those reading Bonar for the first time will enjoy his combination of accurate theology, and beautiful prose. Like many of the great pastor theologians (Calvin, Edwards, Luther, Augustine), theology always led to doxology with Bonar. The only weakness of this good volume is that many of the quotes are left to stand alone. When one reads Bonar's writings unedited, one will see even more beauty in the balance he exhibits. So, if you are ready for a deeper plunge, I highly recommend Bonar's biography of M'Cheyene, and his excellent commentary on the book of Leviticus. One wouldn't think that a commentary on Leviticus would be beautiful, but this one will lead you right into worship. Also, highly recommended is Horatius Bonar's "The Everlasting Righteousness".
