Art thieves should be shot. Which is why Chris Honeysett, painter, aesthete and--when money's particularly tight-- private investigator in Bath, very nearly didn't take the case. After all, the police have much better resources for tracking stolen works of art. Only his classic Citro?n needs work, his studio is falling down, and the price of sea bass just goes up and up. Then an old friend, seemingly unconnected to the case, is murdered, and Chris finds himself high on a short list of suspects--more than a little distracted as he sets out to find the killer. He soon discovers that when dealing with professional criminals, taking your eye off the ball can have fatal consequences. Murder appears even more brutal against the genteel fa?ade of the Georgian city, where tourists are enjoying an exceptional summer. But there is more bubbling under the surface of Bath than just a hot sulphurous spring.

Good book - lots going on

This book has as its main character an artist/detective with his own style of living, mixing conventional and unconventional attitudes about where and how to live - all with a great sense of humor and a good heart, plus a more than a dash of sarcasm and wit. The writing style is easy to follow and the book flows well, even though there are quite a few plot strands to follow. The setting (Bath, Cornwall, and the main character's home in the country) are used to good effect, and there are lots of relationships among the various characters that are interesting to watch develop. I didn't lose interest as the book came towards its conclusion, as I do when things seem to be goingto a predictable end, because things here take a few unexpected turns. I look forward to more books by this author; I liked the handling of the detecting aspects of the plot as well as seeing more how the characters develop.
