If you aren't a professionally trained mechanic, the Haynes manuals are a life saver. They take alot of the guess work out of what you want to do. However, I do recommend keeping your mechanic buddies on speed dial because the manuals frequently leave out helpful hints like "you may need to smash it with a really big hammer to get it loose". Even with this minor flaw, they are definitely indispensable to the do it yourselfer.
