Reviewers (those who notice) keep trying to do justice to Steve Stern's work by cramming him into one pigeonhole or another: Jewish fiction, magical realism, Memphis fiction, etc. Nice try, Folks, but Stern's writing is unique to him, and it is great reading. My favorite way to review his books is to open the one I intend to review at random. Here's what I got from Harry Kaplan: "Still, you couldn't help but appreciate how, through the offices of the wise guy, the past seemed to be getting a second chance tonight." Ameyn.
