A book your child will want to memorize and recite while they learn to read

My four year old loved this Halloween book last year (it was the 2008 book of the year in our house) and loved it again this year (it was a close second to Dragon's Halloween). On the first read or two, I didn't really "get" the meter and rhythm of the book, but give it a couple of reads and you'll be rattling it off in the car and everywhere from memory like it's a new favorite song. So catchy and infectious, and like the previous reviewer said--just so cute! LOTS of sound words, "hurry," "scurry," "frisk," "frisk." Lots of rhyming, which is what we're practicing nonstop with our little 4YO. Lots of fun, not scary, but captures all the elements of Halloween--costumes, festivity, pumpkin patches, night time critters, spookiness, and lots of fun. This was another book that after it went back to the library had to be added to the "permanent collection." Super cute book, can't recommend it highly enough.

Cute Not-too-scary Halloween book for a little one

My 6 year old just finished reading this to me (with a little help) and we both enjoyed it even though Halloween was well over a month ago. The text is simple and repetitive which made the book easy for him to read and caused very little frustration (though a few of the words were new to him). The story is about a group of jolly mice dressed for Halloween. They're dancing, eating and having a great old time until a cat decides to crash the party. They then devise a way to scare off the cat so they can continue their fun. Gotta love 'em. The drawings are fanciful and spooky without being too scary for little ones. My son loved the final page and said he'd love to read it again. The book gets 5 stars for that comment alone!
