Book Overview

Every Passover Seder ends with a rousing version of Had Gadya, the most loved Passover song. Noted graphic artist Seymour Chwast creates a visual story-within-a-story, in a timeless village where everyone is busy preparing for the holiday. With an Afterword by Rabbi Michael Strassfeld on the history and symbolism of the song, this book enriches the Passover experience for young and old.

classic Passover book

This is a fun adaption of the classic Passover song Had Gadya. I like the folksy illustrations, and the text (which is essentially the words of the song) brings back many memories of singing at seders. The back of the book includes a page with all of the words to Had Gadya in Hebrew, but there is no compilation at the end with the entire text in English. So there is not too much repetition of the song, with the repeating verse; the text simply has the different English phrases on each page but the repeated chorus is not included. This is kind of a bummer because kids usually love repetition, and I think the repetition would make the book more fun to read to a small child. Still a good choice though for an addition to your Jewish library.
