From Sluys in 1340 and Lepanto in 1571, this author traces all the world's greatest naval encounters right through to the Battle of Midway. Expertly researched and extremely well presented, it is quite clear that this author has spent considerable time in research on at least three fronts. Firstly, we have the narrative of these historic encounters put together in an easy-to-read style that brings much satisfaction to the reader. Secondly, we have a first rate selection of photographs to support those actions that took place after photography had been invented. Thirdly, and perhaps most impressively, the author has gone to great lengths to track down some of the world's greatest paintings in addition to cartoons and maps showing the various deployments for each of the subject battles. Altogether, Mr Ortzen has produced a book of great quality here and it is difficult to see how any reader could be disappointed with the content. NM
