Features forty-four small northern and southern California gardens, offering advice on how to overcome the challenges of working in smaller spaces and including photographs of gardens from such cities as Venice, Pasadena, and Laguna Beach.
I have had this book for many years. I consult it so frequently that the pages are falling apart. I love the fact that each garden shows what is possible when space and other elements are "challenging." There is enough variety in the landscape to cover a wide number of situations. Because of this book, I made up my mind that I would always get gardening books from Rizzoli. I used to get gardening books from Timber Press, but was so frustrated by the writing, which wasn't very good. Every time I look at GREAT GARDENS IN SMALL SPACES, I find yet more details (yes, even in the photographs) which escaped me before. The book is about idiosyncracy and imagination. I love it. It freed me from thinking only one way about gardens. I also appreciate that the gardens are all in California, where I live. I often buy gardening books and am frustrated because only a handful of examples end up being from California gardens...
