General Adam Badeau first met Grant when he was appointed to Grant's staff in May 1863 during the Vicksburg campaign. Badeau served Grant from then on. In 1869 he retired from the military with the title Brigadier General. Badeau served as consul general to London, and then to Havana in the years that followed.
