Just What Gen Y's Need - A Practical HowTo Book

I liked this book. A friend of mine recommended I give it to the teens I mentor who are trying to find their first real job. As an entrepreneur who has started three successful companies, I've seen lots of resumes and lots of teens asking for jobs, but most simply don't have the right skills or approach to get the job they want. As a sad case-in-point, (before I had this book to recommend) I had recommended one of my friend's kids apply for a job at one of my business contact's companies. My business contact interviewed the young man and then called me back to suggest that I teach the kid basic interview skills! That was certainly a wake up call for me and the reality that many teens are simply not prepared to land an internship or job--which is what this book explains in a language Gen Y seems to understand and can easily act on. Mr. Dorsey's book covers the basic skills that in my view are essential for success in the workplace (my favorite is his diagram on how tie a tie) and then goes further with practical advice on how to get a mentor, network your way to people with big titles, and not give up when you hear your first inevitable "no." Many of us over 25 might take the things in this book for granted, but for many Gen Y's this book provides a rare source of practical information which they many times are too shy to ask about. Sometimes it is hard for us Gen X and Baby Boomers to recognize that the basic skills and ideas Mr. Dorsey shares are not common sense, but as my recent experiences have shown, the basics are very much the right place to start when you are looking for your first job.

Fantastic Book!!

I found this book when I was searching for something to help my teenage sister with her job hunting. As a successful professional, who has founded and run multiple companies, I was very impressed with this book, which I believe is ideal for any teenager or young professional. It is easy to read and does a wonderful job teaching invaluable skills that will help aspiring professionals find mentors, succeed in interviews, and build enduring networks. The book is apparently used as the basis for a course in over 1,500 schools, which is a testament to its ability to connect with the younger generation.

Great "How To" for young adults

A friend read this book as part of a course at her school and recommended it to me (apparently a lot of schools have courses based on this book, as another friend also said he read the book for a course). This book teaches the keys - like getting mentors, building a network, etc -- and ties it all together. I highly recommend this to anyone setting out into the real world and ready for their first job.

Must Read for College Grads!

This book is an EXCELLENT resource for anyone that is about to graduate from College. The Author has an extremely solid background, very successful, and this book shows what (and what not) to do when interviewing/planning a career! Excellent graduation gift for any of your friends/loved ones!

Every should have a copy of this book. (Or two!)

Jason Dorsey has accomplished many things in his life. From a poor kid to now owning his own publishing business "Golden Ladder Productions" Dorsey shows you the many "Choices" you have in life. This is a great motivator for ANYBODY!
