useful comparison with recent criticism of Vidal

Obviously, Gore Vidal's body of work in 1968 was much smaller than it is now. I had forgotten that Vidal ran for congress and had written about homosexuality in US society as early as 1948. White's book is balanced between biography and literary analysis. At the time of writing, Mr. White had been a professor at the Univ. of Arkansas and at North Carolina State Univ. 157 pages, bibliography and index.
