Book Overview

The Tenth Anniversary Edition of the New York Times bestselling book that has sold over half a million copies in paperback. "I was addicted to "Bewitched" as a kid. I worshipped Darren Stevens the First. When he'd come home from work and Samantha would say, 'Darren, would you like me to fix you a drink?' He'd always rest his briefcase on the table below the mirror in the foyer, wipe his forehead with a monogrammed handkerchief and say, 'Better make it a double.'" (from Chapter Two) You may not know it, but you've met Augusten Burroughs. You've seen him on the street, in bars, on the subway, at restaurants: a twentysomething guy, nice suit, works in advertising. Regular. Ordinary. But when the ordinary person had two drinks, Augusten was circling the drain by having twelve; when the ordinary person went home at midnight, Augusten never went home at all. Loud, distracting ties, automated wake-up calls and cologne on the tongue could only hide so much for so long. At the request (well, it wasn't really a request) of his employers, Augusten lands in rehab, where his dreams of group therapy with Robert Downey Jr. are immediately dashed by grim reality of fluorescent lighting and paper hospital slippers. But when Augusten is forced to examine himself, something actually starts to click and that's when he finds himself in the worst trouble of all. Because when his thirty days are up, he has to return to his same drunken Manhattan life--and live it sober. What follows is a memoir that's as moving as it is funny, as heartbreaking as it is true. Dry is the story of love, loss, and Starbucks as a Higher Power. This description may be from another edition of this product.

Not my cup of tea

This is a book for a man. It is honest and full of feeling, but the low sand the language are too much for me. I thought if was about universal distress at cutting off addictions, applicable to sweets or various obsessions. No. It’s specific.

It's not that funny

I did like this book, although I definitely found it very dark and not really that funny at all. Burroughs' writing is witty and his outlook mildly amusing at times, but the subject matter is very dark and often disturbing. I also have a hard time believing a lot of the story. I'm not sure how accurate a memoir needs to be, but this seems a bit larger-than-life. It was still a good read, though.

Dry - A Memoir by Augusten Burroughs

From the author of Sellivision and Running With Scissors, this is a hillarious book from beginning to end. Burroughs is amazingly irreverent as he tells of a ten year period in his life, but he is also VERY VERY funny, and somehow quite disarming!

Hilarious and Heartrending

Augusten Burroughs is one of the most entertaining writers on the current scene. After reading his RUNNING WITH SCISSORS and accepting the fact that it was truly a memoir (ie, he really DID have that childhood!), most of us who loved that book couldn't wait to see if he would be able to maintain his particular level of genius dry humor. Well, here it is. DRY is the continued life of this amazing writer. It is one of the...

A Simply Wonderful Read

Addiction is not funny. And recovery is not entertaining. Unless, that is, these subjects are in the hands of Augusten Burroughs. Then, it is not merely unexpectedly funny and entertaining but appropriately poignant and touching as well. In DRY, the follow-up to his bestselling memoir RUNNING WITH SCISSORS, Burroughs is all grown up and working in the cutthroat world of advertising. To cope with his high stress and demanding...
