Jig the Dragon Slayer

This book was great. From beginning to end I loved it. From Jig cutting off Rianna finger to him worshipping a forgotten god. I have the complete series and was hoping for more. It has everything a good fantasy book needs. I would recommend this book to anyone whether they like fantasy or not.

A fantasy story from the other side of the sword...

Jim C. Hines has written a very fun and clever story. Jig the goblin is destined to join the ranks of fantasy literatures other great characters.

Better than the Zanth novels

I loved this book, it is one of my favorites now and I know I will want to revisit it often. I also bought the other two books in the series. Each book is stand alone great. I laughed so hard I almost fell out of my chair and yet there is also a lesson to be learned in the book. Great read. Jig is a goblin. He lives with the rest of the goblins in a magic mountain. He is the runt and gets bullied often. A large mean goblin, Porak, forces him to go with his company while they check out the tunnels. They stop to drink and play craps while Jig is forced to wander off further in the tunnels. He comes upon a group of adventurers. Prince Barius, a warrior, Prince Ryslind, a mage, Darnak, a dwarf and a captured young elf girl. She is a thief who was caught by Darnak and is being forced to accompany the trio on their quest. Jig is the only one left after the goblins encounter the adventurers and he is forced to lead the party deeper into the mountain. They are in search of the Rod of Creation. Jig knows what a goblin is and does, he is a coward and he runs. Unfortunately that is not possible for our hero. So his great idea is to lead the party into all of the most dangerous places he knows. The only thing is that he only knows the goblin tunnels. As you can imagine the journey is a hoot and the adventures are swift and deadly. From one death trap to another, Jig has already decided that death is his destination. But as they travel Jig learns things not the least is that Darnak serves a God who helps him, by healing injuries due to battle. Jig thinks that might come in handy if he can find a God who won't mind a goblin worshiper. There must be at least one God who needs a servant. I found the adventure wonderful, exciting, and delicious. I look forward to the other two books in the series. GOBLIN HERO and GOBLIN WAR if they are as good as GOBLIN QUEST, I will dive in and devour each of them just as I did this one. Great Reading.

Wow! Simply Delightful

"Goblin Quest" is a fun and fast-paced fantasy adventure, laced with light satire focusing on fantasy tales and D & D modules. The main character, J--, is a cowardly goblin who is captured by a classic band of adventurers (fighter, mage, thief, and cleric). J-- is swept up their heroic adventure, where he shows wit and a humorously different viewpoint. The author, Jim Hines, shows genuine talent for character development, plot, pacing, dialog, description, and surprise developments. For the first time in a year, I read a first novel from a major publisher without wondering what friend helped get the book published. "Goblin Quest" stands pleasantly on its own, without need for sequel (though there are two). This book will appeal to readers who enjoyed Covenants: A Borderlands Novel (Borderland (Roc)) or Forged Without Fire: A Champion for Catlover or Dragon Bones (The Hurog Duology, Book 1). Those books aren't quite as good, but "Goblin Quest" sets a pretty high bar.

Excellent read

Goblin Quest is an excellent book! It's a twist on the typical human hero quest-this story is told from the point of the Goblin, Jig, who is forced to help humans hunt their treasure. Usually the enemy, this poor Goblin knows he could be killed at any moment by his companions or by the risks his companions insist on taking. He just doesn't understand why the adventurers want to put themselves at risk over something that isn't food! (A Goblin after my own heart!) What is a bit of gold or some magical thing? You can't eat it, and you can't curl up near it and be warm! As with any quest, there is danger and adventure as the "heroes" search through caverns and tunnels, but the book is also quite funny in spots. It has warm-hearted moments too-although one wouldn't expect it from a Goblin, this Goblin has a pet. By default Smudge is taken along on the quest. Smudge may very well be the most endearing character in the story; he's certainly the strangest. Overall this was a fabulous read-a book I read in one sitting!
