an awesome cookbook, even apart from being gluten-free

Michael Cox's Gluten Free cookboook is awesome. I was immediately drawn to it because it doesn't have a bunch of baked goods on the cover; most gluten-free cookbooks recreate painfully inferior versions of gluten-y food you used to love. That doesn't interest me at all. I want to make delicious food that happens to be gluten-free, and that's what this book is. For that reason, there's no weird ingredients that are hard to find, another plus. Also, he doesn't assume everyone has a lot of expensive kitchen equipment - he tells you how to do something with a food processor if you have one, but also if you don't, how to do it with everyday non-electric equipment. Most of the recipes seem to come from Cox's experience cooking for his guest house in Spain, so there's a great Spanish/mediterranean flavor to it that is casually gluten-free. Some recipes I've tried so far - homemade mayonnaise, pesto, cornbread - all delicious - I make these all the time! Figs in honey and wine - amazing, and ridiculously easy (most of his recipes seem to be quite easy and foolproof). I saved the extra fig/honey/wine syrup - it was a beautiful pink color, and served it on vanilla ice cream later. My chef friends used the recipe for chocolate hazelnut cake to make my birthday cake and *everyone* loved it, gluten-free or not. In fact, the same couple (they own a wonderful fine dining restaurant here) asked to borrow the book from me later - they don't eat gluten-free but really admired the recipes. And yesterday I made the swordfish in caper and tomato sauce. Really really good! and easy! This is simply the best gluten-free cookbook out there. I wish he had a followup. I would buy it without hesitation. (oh, the other commenter is right - look out for the one recipe that calls for beer - use a gluten-free beer, and maybe substitute for blue cheese also if you're worried about that.) You will eat well with this cookbook.

A beautiful cookbook, but use with caution

This is an attractive cookbook and every recipe I have tried has been delicious and easy to follow. The dishes tend to be elegant and great for entertaining, but not too difficult for everyday family meals. However, I have noted a couple ingredients that are not gluten-free, such as blue cheese and beer. Overall, I highly recommend this cookbook, but do not rely on all ingredients listed to be gluten-free.

New recipes for Coeliacs

This atractively presented book has given our family a new lease of life with cooking for a gluten-freen diet. The recipes are easy to follow and well presented. The range of recipes presented in the book makes it easy to make a selection for any occasion. Dining out is nearly impossible on a gluten-free diet. This cookbook makes dining in a treat. The introduction to the book gives renewed interest in cooking for those people who suffer from food allergies (and those who have to eat with them).
