"When the pupil is ready the teacher appears."

This is the third novel in the Shadow Rider Series.I have read only 2 others novels by this author and really enjoyed them. "The Savage Trail" which I reviewed on August 27,2008,and "The Savage Curse ,reviewed on January 30,2009. While I found those two excellent, and looked forward to this novel with high hopes ;I was a little disappointed. Sherman is an excellent writer, who fills his novels with wonderful descriptions, lots of action, colorful characters;and constructs a storyline with lots of adventure, and doesn't fall back on mystery or detective writing. His novels are somewhat longer than the 170 or 180 pages we get in the "Trailsman","Longarm" or "Slocum" series;this one running to 229 pages.I find the biggest difference is that Sherman gives us a lot more descriptive, but good, writing. This is whether he is describing the landscape ,characters or action scenes. However ;with this story,I found it dragged on a little too long and would have been better if it had been shortened by at least 30 pages. There is great action when Zak Cody finally gets the enemy where he can take care of them. However;after a drawn out story,it ends too abruptly. Don't get me wrong,I'll be looking forward to reading more by this excellent writer. He has great skill,as seen by passages like this; "I am the fear of Narbona," Zak said. "I am the fear that comes in the deep of night and walks in his dreams. I am the fear that comes when a man is standing before a firing squad with a dozen rifles aimed at his heart.I do not fear. I AM fear." or; "When time cracks its whip,a small square of the universe can bend and twist until a man feels as if he walks through a quagmire of quicksand or is hurtling off a cliff into an interminable abyss at the speed of lightning. And sometimes, time becomes all jumbled up,going fast, then so slow it seems to crawl. Time, someone once said,is God's way of keeping everything from happening all at once." See what I mean!! Be sure to notice the excellent artwork on the cover,it doesn't get any better than this.Too bad the artists aren't given credit.
