Born in New Haven, Connecticut, George W. Bush spent most of his childhood in Texas. As a child, Bush loved playing baseball and getting into a bit of mischief. Like his father, he attended Phillips Academy, an elite boarding school. While Bush did not excel in his schoolwork or athletics, his warm, outgoing personality earned him many friends. After graduating from Yale University and Harvard Business School, he returned to Texas to work in the oil industry. He entered the political arena in 1978, losing in his run to become a U.S. representative from Texas. In 1994, he won his bid to become the governor of Texas. In his second term as governor, Bush entered the 2000 presidential race, beating Al Gore in a close election. He became the forty-third president of the United States of America and the second son of a president to win the White House. Book jacket.
