George Custer The Famous Figures of the American Frontier is a series of books for the juvenile reader. George Custer is one of the books. Hal Marcovit's narrative keeps to the historical facts. Since he is a journalist, the book reads like a newspaper story. The book has several photographs as well as color illustrations. It is well done. The mythos of the Custer Legend has taken several hits over the last two decades. However, the facts presented in the book speak for themselves. George Armstrong Custer was loved by a large number of the citizens of the US, admired by his men, feared and respected by the Native Americans and loathed and hated by the Grant Administration. Custer's charges of abuse, especially where the Indians were concerned, against the Grant Administration won him a heap of political enemies. This book is a good introduction to one of the most colorful historical figures of the 1860's and 70's. It is well suited for its intended audience as well as any adult who wants a brief biographical sketch of the "Boy General" who gained immortality on a Sunday afternoon of June 25, 1876. He died at the age of 36.
