Don't be put off by that starry whimsical cover. This is an A+ manga!

I've read only one volume of Petshop of Horrors, which was quite outstanding and left me wanting more (however my library never got anymore, sob). The author, Matsuri Akino does not disappoint with this new title. She keeps up that excellent combination of suspense, horror, fantasy, drama, mystery and yes, even potentional romance in this new series. When I was at the bookstore I wasn't sure whether to get it. But I am so glad I did because it exceeded my epectations. Here's the rundown of what I loved about this manga. 1) A suspenseful start. From the first page we are treated to a disturbing and later symbolic dream of the main character Kamishina. It built a mystery and interest right from the beginning. Plus, I'm a sucker for opening with startling dream sequences. 2) The main character, Kamishina is good. He's funny, caring and has a mystery in his family (dad missing and yeah he's a reincarnated king, lol.) Yeah, he's the cliche reluctant hero but the writing of the character creates a good pathos of someone struggling with strange powers and the fact he's an heir to some far off country in Asia. I loved how he responded to the fact of going to his kingdom! Kamishina said "So what then? I go there, get crowned, spend the rest of my time eating good food, surrounded by mountains of treasure?! Do they even have arcades in this country! Do they sell gaming mags?!" LOL! 3) Just like Petshop of Horrors, this manga has dark subjects such as abuse and murder. There is also blood/gore. But, the dark is nicely balanced with comedy and there is always a sense of hope which is essential from being too depressing. 4)Supporting characters are good also. Garuda & the other magical creatures/servants of Kamashina are hilarious. Ms. Akino manages to make them creepy beings and somehow human at the same time. Mayu, the only female supporting character so far, is smart, stoic and mysterious. You'll find your self asking: What illness does she have to keep her in a wheelchair? What strange powers does she have? Plus, she and Kamishina have good chemistry. Potential love interest? Hmm... I could go on more but I don't want to spoil! All in all, this is an entertaining read. You'll want to read it again and again to see if you missed any clues to plot and character. And you're gonna wanna know what happends next. Because I sure do!
