Action and science fiction with unconventional characters

I found David Wong's books through the John Dies at the End series so I was very excited for an entirely new universe from the same writer. The setting and characters are very well developed as they always are in his books and the comedy is very well done. Since his other books usually focus on supernatural phenomena, the fast paced action and high focus on planning/strategic moves from the protagonists' allies and enemies are a very big step away in structure from previous works. But it works very well. It's always interesting to examine their plans as they make them and figure out each person's motives since unlike the other series, Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits is told strictly from the perspective of our main character Zoey. You only get to know what she knows, and as she finds herself in an entirely unfamiliar world so different from her own little hometown, you have to learn along side her who can be trusted.
I would say this book is fairly intense, with some pretty gruesome injuries and scenes of suffering alongside references to things like human trafficking and devaluing of groups of people. So if sensitive subject matter is a problem, this book isn't for you. Otherwise, I'd say definitely pick this one up for a wild ride that still finds time for plenty of humor from the unique characters and their clashing personalities.
