This book offers a large range of Sutcliffe's work in beautiful plate presentation. Each is also given a thumbnail description, both in historical and technical detail. The text by Michael Hiley is brilliantly written, well informed and a photographer's dream. This book is one of the most exciting finds I have had. Considering that most of these photographs are from the late 19th century, the naturalism of the composition is remarkable considering the exposure times of the time. Sutcliffe brings his experience of his father's artistic training to each of his plates. Even in these very early days of photography, Sutcliffe could import a sky from one picture to use in another. The effective use of focal length, mist and grey gradients is superb. Above all, the eye for subject and the sharpness of each plate is quite unforgettable.
