This book is actually John Christopher Thomas' (he goes by Chris) doctoral disertation. It is written in a very technical and scholarly style. He does have other books for the lay person, but this book is more for a serious student of the Bible and of course those that are professional theologians. Chris offers careful and thorough historical research into the ancient practice of footwashing both in scripture and in ancient history. He also offers careful exegesis of the footwashing passage in John 13. In the end he comes down on the side that footwashing should be practiced today in the Church and that it should be seen as a sacrament that deals symbolically with post baptismal sins. Chris is part of the Church of God out of Cleveland, Tennessee which is a Church that practices footwashing, but less and less. Hopefully, this book and his other writings on the subject will help revive its necessary practice and theology in our churches and in the ecumenical community at large.
