He realizes that he must get help as his life becomes more and more meaningless and desperate. Daniel checks into a rehab clinic to get help. From here the story follows Daniel's path to sobriety with amazingly clear and gut wrenching detail. The reader feels as if he is part of Daniel's struggle.
