Beautiful, evocative, universal

I'm English. I lived in NYC for 3 years, but never really visited Washington Heights. It doesn't matter. This is a beautiful book, full of charm and sadness. It is wonderfully evocative of the pain of teenage years, and I've read it countless times. As it happens, I grew up in the rough NE of England, but the emotions and pain described here could so easily be transposed to my home town. A masterpiece.
