A charming nursery rhyme for little ones learning to count!Five little ducks went out one day, Over the hills and far away. Mother duck said, "Quack, quack, quack, quack." But only four little ducks came back. Pamela Paparone has transformed this traditional rhyme into a cozy, charming counting book for very young children. One by one, the five little ducks disappear, while mother duck is busy raking leaves, washing the winter quilts, picking apples, and baking a pie. In addition to the dwindling duck family, there are lots of other creatures for children to identify and count in the bucolic early-autumn landscape. And there is a cause for celebration when finally all five errant little ducks come back.
This is the well-known and loved five little ducks story, but the artwork is absolutely charming and my daughter loves to notice new details each time we read it. Definitely a book that will get read and re-read, but you won't tire of it since it is so beautifully done.

My 19 month old son adores this book. It's been his favorite since the first time we read it. He's fascinated with the illustrations - they are gorgeous and very interesting. I'm so glad that we were given this book. (We have the hardback)

This has consistently been one of my toddler's favorite books since she was only a few months old. She loves to hear me sing the words to this book and never seems to tire of it. The illustrations are bright and cheerful and it has become a favorite of mine as well. Highly recommended!
Catchy rhyme and exquisite illustrations

I intended to buy the book for a gift, then ended up keeping it for my boys (3 and 5 years old) and buying something else for the birthday girl. The rhyme is "Five little ducks went out one day, over the hills and far away. Mother duck said "Quack, quack, quack, quack", but only four little ducks came back". Each day another duck does not return home until no ducklings return. The mother duck goes on with her daily chores which lead up to a big apple pie for when all the ducklings come home. The ryhme makes children aware of counting backwards, subtracting and also that being home with mum is best. I have heard my 5 year old reciting the rhyme to himself. I have caught myself doing the same. The illustrations in this book impressed me immensely due to the detail and colour. The illustrations tell another story, which means there is lots to keep the children interested.
A perfect book to read to a toddler!

My 15-month old daughter loves to hear me read this book! She studies the colorful pictures on each page, and watches my face as I say "Quack, quack, quack, quack." It's short, with just a couple of lines on each page, an it has an excellent rhythm.
