I used this program with my daughter when it first was published in 1994. My daughter was only four years old when she learned, from First Reader, how to read. The cassette tapes tell you how to use the program. It is quite simplistic, but it holds the child's attention beautifully. I think the clear print and bright colors help the child stay interested, yet not distracted because the pages are not cluttered. Everything is spaced well. It was suggested that I only work with my daughter for 20 minutes a sitting with this program. But she always wanted to learn much longer than that, so we did. She was reading well within 3 months. This is not the norm, however. In fact, my daughter would memorize the books we read to her and then "read" them to her dolls before she was 3 years old. This just happens to be her strong suit -- but I believe every elementary student could benefit from this program. Best wishes!

Phyllis Schlafly put this book out years ago and all children should use it to start reading. A homeschool must!
Best book for teaching your child to read

I have launched two readers with this book and am currently working on a third. The book can be used initially to teach a child letter sounds and then launches into lists of three letter words that are similar. The book progresses to the point of making your child at least a level 3 reader. You can go at your own pace -- the back of the book has very helpful and extremely short description of skills being taught on each page for the parent. I highly recommend. I have tried at least 7 other reading programs-- this is the best in my opinion.

I have launched two readers with this book and I am currently working on my third. The book can be used initially to teach letter sounds. Then you progress to 3 letter words grouped together in by same starting letter and vowel sounds all the way to multisyllable words. By the time the child finishes you will have a level 3 reader who can read beginning chapter books.I highly recommend. I have tried at least 7 other programs. This is the best.
The best book on teaching phonics

I used this book to teach my two young children to read. We followed the guideline and one year later they both could read simple books before 1st grade. A side benefit with this book is my children learn to spell simple words on their own --- all before they entered 1st grade
