How I love this book. Like so much of Roy Blount's writing, it begs to be read out loud, although I am sure that I could not do justice to the terrific voices he creates. This is not a typical political story at all: it's about a man married to a woman he loves but can't quite understand, and how he's flummoxed when she quickly, unexpectedly becomes Vice President and then ascends to the Presidency after the President dies. The plot is rich and satisfying, and the characters stay with you. Blount describes himself in the About the Author as a "novelist, now," but he has yet to publish another novel -- perhaps because, like his narrator, he "hates to get people in trouble." Please get some more people in trouble, Mr. Blount -- we're waiting!
