Dempsey has done an outstanding job of pulling together Native and non-Native viewpoints of the Whiskey trade in Montana and the Canadian Prairie Provinces. This is one of the best overall historical studies of the trade and its effects on the Native people, the Northern Plains, and politics in both the U.S. and Canada. With strong backgrounds of those involved in the trade, and specific events concerning those traders, and the Native people on an individual and tribal basis, it makes for an interesting read.I strongly recommend it for those interested in the development of the Northern Plains!
