The fiery action manga that inspired the brand-new anime, from the creator of Soul Eater FIRE WALK WITH ME The city of Tokyo is plagued by a deadly phenomenon: spontaneous human combustion Luckily, a special team is there to quench the inferno: The Fire Force The fire soldiers at Special Fire Cathedral 8 are about to get a unique addition. Enter Shinra, a boy who possesses the power to run at the speed of a rocket, leaving behind the famous "devil's footprints" (and destroying his shoes in the process). Can Shinra and his colleagues discover the source of this strange epidemic before the city burns to ashes?
4.5* stars, rounded up for full omnibus volume. 4* stars for single volume one.
His first step to achieving his dream of becoming a hero, like he promised his mother he would, Shinra joined the Special Fire Cathedral 8. This team is tasked with discovering the source of the deadly phenomenon plaguing the city of Tokyo: spontaneous human combustion! He's known as Third Gen, meaning he is blessed with the ability to ignite fire from his feet and travel faster than a racing car. But Shinra's haunting past follows him, along with the cruel moniker, Devil's Footprints. Will he become the hero he dreams of, or will the fires of his past prove he is a devil?
This is a really fun start. Shinra has a lot of things to work through relating to his past, but he's a very likable character and someone that's easy to root for. Some of the characters are reminiscent of Soul Eater, Vol. 1 characters, but their designs and personalities are totally different. I like to see how similar yet progressed the art is between different series written/drawn by the same person. I just think it's fun to notice the differences.
The world is interesting, and I am looking forward to getting to know all the characters, but I can't say it is super different from other shonen series; however, it does stick out in its own right with its premise. I also like how the majority of the art is bold and has thick lines, yet it has stellar detailing, even for innocuous things in the background. And the fire looks so good!
This review is only for the single volume one, even though I'm currently reading the omnibus set. I'm still going to review volumes one, five, ten, etc., and also put them on the corresponding omnibus volumes that house those single volumes.
I can't wait to read more, and from the cliffhanger at the end, I'm really looking forward to diving into the mysteries surrounding the fire company and Shinra's life. If you like action and shonen series, then definitely give this a try. But also, don't discount it because of it being a shonen series. I can tell there's gonna be a bit more to it than just action.
