Rachel Gardiner's family life is far from happy. She leaves home and flees to the one place where she has known parental kindness; the home of her schoolfriend, Angela. As her friendly feelings for Angela's elder brother, David, deepen into romance, Rachel believes she has everything she wants. But then comes the outbreak of WWII, and David joins the RAF.
