Book Overview

First ladies are supposed to be dignified background figures, quietly supportive of their husbands' agendas. Above all, they're not supposed to act out or cause even a whiff of scandal. Of course, reality often overrides conventional wisdom, and this book shows how far from the prim ideal many of the Presidents' wives have strayed. Part irreverent portrait gallery, part exuberant expose, Feisty First Ladies and Other Unforgettable White House Women...

Well worth the read

Every president the United States has had has been quite the character, and the women they marry are no different. "Feisty First Ladies: and Other Unforgettable White House Women" tells the untold story of the women of the White House, including how they compared and contrasted to the men. Irrelevant yet interesting, author Autumn Stephens shows how it's not just recent White House women that have garnered massive media attention, and how even the likes of Mary Todd Lincoln was making headlines in the 1860s. "Feisty First Ladies" is well worth the read for fans of the other side of history not often recorded.

White House Wives, Mistresses, and Daughters Gone Wild

From Martha Washington to Michelle Obama, //Feisty First Ladies// reveals the juicy inside scoop on all of our nation's first ladies and their quirks. Fortunately, author Autumn Stephens doesn't limit the book to wives. She also covers dozens of other female White House personalities such as mistresses, daughters, spunky journalists, and movie stars. With chapter headings like "Sarah Palin: The Curious Campaign of Caribou Barbie," and, "Susan Ford: The Daughter of Dubious Virtue," this glossary-style book is a fun, upbeat read. Autumn Stephens' irreverent, straightforward voice is as entertaining at the cover design of high-kicking first ladies in Vaudeville costumes. But don't let author's tone fool you; this is a sound, well-researched book that is every bit as educational as it is entertaining. //Feisty First Ladies// would make a great gift book for a woman history-buff, gossip-hound, or comedy fan. Females in the House

Stephens, Autumn. "Feisty First Ladies and Other Unforgettable White House Women", Cleis Press, 2009. Females in the House Amos Lassen On Inauguration Day, Cleis Press released a wonderful new book. "Feisty First Ladies and Other Unforgettable White House Women", It is chock full of facts that most of us don't know and it allows us to look at the White House in a completely different way. 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue us the most famous address in the world. Some of us have visited but I doubt that we know all the secrets--did you know that the Clintons had a hot tub that seats seven installed? Probably this is news to you as it was to me. (Do I really care?--not really but it could be an interesting something to say at a party of pretentious queens). The book is both a photo gallery and a expose of the White House giving us information that we really don't need but it is fun to know, i.e. Mary Todd Lincoln loved to shop, Mamie Eisenhower slept until noon and there are some first ladies who received higher ratings than their presidential husbands. But the author does not just look at first ladies; she also writes about other women who if they did not at least call the White House home, had ties to it. Some of the ladies actually rocked the foundations of the presidential home and sometimes thus rocked the nation as well. The book is great fun and the amount of trivia is amazing. Get yourself a copy and have a look at see that just because they lived in the White House doesn't mean that they don't do the same kinds of things that we do.
