Lovely little book

This lovely hands-on guide to dealing with a diagnosis of cancer can be used either individually as a workbook or as a roadmap for group discussion. Beautifully written and practical, it is easily accessible to all. Lessons are offered as short bits of wisdom the author calls "Lifelines" -followed by concrete discussions, specific examples, and suggestions for active personal exploration. The lessons of this book help the reader to dig deep and tap into the strength of the deepest reaches of the soul. It gently guides the reader to explore places of inner stillness to find comfort. Its compassionate voice guides us to deeply confront the challenges of a cancer diagnosis and find grace, hope, and healing in the face of life's most profound challenge. The cancer survivor, whether newly diagnosed or a long term survivor, can find in this book a source of courage and a gentle companion in the search for meaning in life under profoundly changed circumstances.

A gift for cancer patients and survivors

Judy Gattis Smith fills her book with both straightforward, practical suggestions and inspiring insight, a remarkable combination! With a voice that is both kind and knowledgeable, she provides clear steps & exercises for anyone faced with a cancer diagnosis. In a manner that I found unique among books of this ilk, the author gently but persuasively encourages the reader to dig deep and find meaning and hidden beauty in cancer. I found the "lifelines" throughout the book helpful, and I especially appreciated her ability to find exactly the right passages of scripture. The reflections of other survivors were compelling and added so much to the message. There are a few special things that I will take away from reading this book: "Whatever we pay attention to will grow." I think this is the most important message, and her guidance in helping patients be intentional and focused on potential sources of inspiration was truly valuable to me. She also does a wonderful job of helping readers work through finding positive images and metaphors. And, one suggestion she offers to help you quiet yourself is to color a mandala. Now when someone I know is diagnosed, I plan to give them a mandala coloring book, a box of colored pencils, and a copy of this book! I used this book on my own, but the leader's guide in the book would make this an excellent tool for a small group. When I had cancer, I found that I slowed down and eliminated all the nonessentials. What a wonderful opportunity to really think and feel and reflect and get closer to God. This book is the perfect accessory to take along on that journey. Thank you, Judy.
