Book Overview

James Fowler's work as the originator of faith development research -- his use of the theories of Jean Piaget and Erik Erikson for theology -- has been widely acclaimed for its profound impact on the field of religious education, and for its promise for other fields.

Must READ

Though written in the 80's, this gem is a seminal treatment on stages in faith development. Incorporating Robert Kegan's Stages in the Evolution of the Self, Fowler guides the reader to examine one's own faith, and provides a nonjudgmental templet for understanding others'. His practical implications for worship and spiritual care are foundational. I've learned so much from this tome.

A profound statement of congregational faithfulness and calling

I use this book as a text in a graduate class on the dynamics of Christian community at a small private Christian university. The text of this book is written in a difficult theological and philosophical style. However, the core of the book is excellent. The most profound aspect of the book for me is the theology of calling that Fowler expounds. It is the most sophisticated and thorough I have read. He then proceeds to apply his faith development theory to the life of the church and developmentally appropriate pastoral care. This book is most excellent.

Read it and love the ministry again!

I am a pastor and church planter and I have been in the ministry since 1985. I have read dozens and dozens of books on the ministry. Next to the Bible this is the best book I have ever read. This is not a theological work, though Fowler paints a beautiful picture of the importance of the church and the value of strong pastorial leadership. This is a book about the practical theology of understanding that people not only come in different shapes, sizes, and colors, but that they also come in different stages of faith. This book makes me want to be a better pastor. It reminds me that my job is to help people to discover and meet God where they are at instead of trying to conform them into a program. It lifts the burden off of my shoulders and restores my faith in the great purposes of God through Jesus Christ. Thank you Dr. Fowler.
