Fairy war, Merlin, God, and Sorcery

If you’re looking for a book that is going to completely keep you on your toes and throw you through so many loops that you lose count, then Fairies, Sorcery, and the Devil written by Donald Richter is definitely the book for you. Well written and fully imaginative, you will surely have to read it several times to find all of the gems hidden throughout the book. While minding his own business in his backyard, Jack is tossed into the mist of fairy battle when a gang of blue fairies attack a green fairy. The green fairy once saved, turns on Jack, who is then saved by a red fairy and introduced to a whole world of unexplained phenomena. The red fairies find something special in Jack, deciding to enlist his help to banish the rest of the blue fairies to a distant planet. Throw in a ten thousand year old Merlin, who teaches Jack sorcery and regeneration, God’s angels who are sent to take care of the blue fairies, demons, even Lucifer himself; and you will find yourself in a story of epic proportions. If you are looking for the legendary fae of Shakespearean tales, this is not it. Oberon, Titania, and Mab will not be found here. But what you will find is something completely different than I have ever read before. Good versus evil is prevalent, tenacity a must, and maybe just a couple dozen ingenious weapons. Fairies, Sorcery, and the Devil definitely has a uniqueness that doesn’t exist in most books. It is very well written, lacking grammar and punctuation errors. It has the feel of a professionally edited novel and has a lovely flow to the narration. Everything is written in Jack’s view point, through his eyes we are able to understand the live he has lived and why he ends up where he does. The secondary characters posses a well-roundness with great hilarity, some psychosis, and lots of quips. The dialogue is funny, yet intense at times. I found myself greatly liking Jack and rooting for his success. I wasn’t sure what to think about this book at first, it’s uniqueness kind of threw me off guard. There were a few parts where I kind of wandered off and it took a while to get me back on track, however, after rereading these sections I began to thoroughly enjoy the book. There is so much happening that it would be worth the time to read it several times. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to get lost in a fantasy world, full of strange and new possibilities. I wholeheartedly give this book a 4 out of 4 stars . I believe that it holds something for everyone and would be good for a variety of ages.
