Exposition of the Gospel of John, One-Volume Edition

Although Arthur W. Pink was an adherent to the 5 Points of Calvinism (the teachings of John Calvin), his commentary on the Gospel of John is one of the best verse-by-verse commentaries I have ever read and studied. He delves into subjects with astute clarity and insight and never fails to glorify the Saviour with every turn of the page. It is interesting to know that near the end of Calvin's life, John wavered on the belief of "limited atonement". It is a shame he didn't investigate the truth about the other four points. I have discovered no evidence that Pink ever altered his view of any of the five points, although some of his writings would suggest such, so be mindful that Pink was a Calvinist. Albeit, I highly recommend this volume to anyone seriously studying the glorious Gospel of John, along with the simplistic work of J. F. Strombeck, "Grace and Truth". I also highly recommend Pink's commentary on the book of Hebrews, also the best I've ever read on that New Testament book. Pink has written many other books (the "Gleanings" series), which are also recommended. Adding Pink's "John" to your library is one of the best things a Bible student can do. I doubt that you would regret it.

This is my second volume of said book, the first was given to a friend years ago. In teaching the Gospel of John reciently I needed a excellent commentary. I remembered Pink's book as it is a excellent study tool. I reconmend it to teachers and pastors.

When I started looking for commentaries, I started with Calvin's, but found him too dry. Pink's book is both compelling, easy to follow, and, most importantly, asks the student questions on the Gospel before attempting to answer them in the book. Pink teaches you how to ask the right questions more than spoon-feeding you the right answers.

While I have a copy of the 3 volume set of this book, I love reading Pink along with my personal study of the Gospel of John. Arthur Pink brings ideas that are constantly challenging. Even though this is not an exegetical commentary, Pink handles the greek language in a way that most readers will be able to understand.

GOOD POINTS: 1. Pink strongly emphasizes that the Gospel of John reflects the deity of Christ. 2. Each chapter is 7 - 15 pages and covers a specific event in the Gospel of John. The outline of the book follows the chapters in Scripture consecutively and completely. 3. Study questions are provided by Pink to focus the readers attention to the main points in the Gospel. 4. Pink prayerfully considers each text and has been blessed with an ability to lucidly present rational commentary on texts. BAD POINTS: 1. I humbly suggest that he may spiritualize a bit much, especially with the use of numbers. However, the main points of the Gospel are clearly presented.
