This work introduces the computer novice to the UNIX operating system, describing how operating systems work, how the UNIX file system is organized and how to create, copy, rename and remove files and more. The material is relevant to release 3 of UNIX.
This book is the one that got me started in Unix, and got me loving Unix, about 16 years ago. It was probably an older addition than this one, but if this new edition is anything like the previous, it is a great starter that covers all key areas including using the shell, piping, filtering, scripting, file editing (vi and ed), user administration, file system structure, etc. I heartily recommend it.
Nice introductory text

For beginners, this is a very good book. Kochan's explanations are simple and a beginner will find it easy to grasp the basics of the UNIX operating system. Easy to read & interesting.
Good introductory Unix text, even if it is outdated.

This is a good book for people like me (people who are totally new to Unix). It is pretty outdated, but most of the Unix concepts are "timeless" and still valid. The book starts off assuming you know nothing about Unix and runs through all the basics. It is well written and easy to understand. I believe it is out of print now, I was only able to read it because someone in the office had a copy laying around and I borrowed it. Good introductory text and starting point before you read more in-depth books.
