!exacto!: A Practical Guide to Spanish Grammar

This text is exceptional in its presentation and categorization of information, and will suffice as a stand-alone Spanish I and II textbook for homeschoolers. Granted, my two years of high school spanish coupled with two additional years of undergraduate spanish have greatly facilitated in its ease of use. However, with careful research and a few free Spanish websites, this text can easily fulfill both course requirements since it travails the path from nouns, adjectives, simple present tense verbs to the imperfect, the preterite, the subjective and beyond (by the way, I did not encounter subjectives until I had reached SPAN 201, which is way beyond Span II (Spanish II corresponds with SPAN 102...the series goes SPAN 101, 102, 201, 202), but I will incorporate them into my son's II course since he has an ear for languages and enjoys his spanish course). All in all, if you are a hands on homeschooling parent and have a measure of functional spanish in your repertoire, pick up this text because it will make your job a bit easier given its coherent structure and content (if you are not hands on, one of those internet/computer-based programs would be more advisable).

It was recommended for me by my Spanish teacher, the book is for intermediate level learners of Spanish, it explains the Spanish grammar in a great way, many examples and quotations, it has many exercises. It's very easy to understand, and the explanation is in English and Spanish, This book is good to be used in Spanish courses in schools and colleges or for self study

This book is set up in a manner very similar to an outline. It is as if the author took notes on every other Spanish book ever written and condensed it into this paperback. It lists grammar rules in 3 levels so that any level of Spanish student could use this book to learn or to review. I have an entire bookcase full of Spanish Verb/Vocab and Grammar books and this is by far the best.

Exacto is a grammar book with a difference. There are conventional features such as verb tables that one would expect in any grammar, but there are also significant differences derived from the pedagogical approaches pioneered by the distance-teaching Open University in the United Kingdom that make this grammar book stand out from its rivals. The authors, who all work in the department of modern languages at the Open University, demonstrate the pedagogical skills that are so typical of many of this University's materials, and which make its products so useful to learners.As someone whose education was disrupted across three countries, I missed out on any understanding of formal grammar until I was in my 20s when I began to write seriously in English. It was then that I began to see how important having such structure was to expressing oneself clearly. On the other hand, the authors have usefully graded the points 1 (the most basic points, beginners to lower-intermediate level), 2 (towards intermediate level, covering the main exceptions to rules and some of the nuances of meaning that structural changes to expression give rise to), and 3 (more complex points). On the other hand, all of us who are approaching the task of learning a second language start from somewhere. In my case, this is English, so I found the way in which this book focused on explaining how Spanish grammar differs from English, and what points of Spanish grammar are particularly useful for English speakers, particularly useful.Grammar usage in any language varies from place to place and across time. As one might expect of a book published in 2002, this book is bang up to date. Examples of contemporary usage are scattered throughout the text. Moreover, as someone who has lived or worked in every Spanish-speaking country of South America bar Bolivia and Paraguay, in Mexico, and in all the Central American republics excluding Honduras and El Salvador, the useful pointers to differences in usage across the Spanish speaking world, including differences affecting the Canaries and regions of Spain, are immensely useful.
