Sparky lover of life provides great advice from the 70s

My S.O. is always finding deals--one of her biggest pleasures is getting compliments on a sleek new stylish outfit that she paid $1.50 for at the Salvation Army--and she picks up free books when the library cleans out inventory. A blast from the past, Naura Hayden's little book, dust-colored from the years, peeks out at me the other day in the SO's kitchen nook with that one magic word: Energy. Something we all want and often find wanting: Power is everything. Power is everything. Without it they don't talk to us, they don't correct their trajectory, they don't turn the heat shield around... -- John (Loren Dean), Apollo 13 NASA briefing Energy is everything. Naura gets right to it: she was ill, life wasn't going well, she had bad habits, her 30-something body was falling apart. Then after a doctor's visit and reading Let's Eat Right to Keep Fit by nutrition pioneer Adelle Davis, Naura fiddled around in the kitchen and came up with a simple, remarkably cheap energy drink: Naura's Dynamite Milkshake 2 cups skim milk 1 tablespoon safflower 2 packets (or equivalent) sugar substitute 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Start the blender on low and add: 4 heaping tablespoons nutritional (or brewer's) yeast 4 heaping tablespoons powdered lecithin [1] A simple calculation shows this basic formula for the killer milkshake will cost you approximately one Federal Reserve Note (FRN) per cup. Two cups' worth meets an average man's daily protein requirements and almost every nutritional need. Qua early adopter, I've been using it for a couple of weeks now. Many bennies. Not only energy, but appearance I think, too: skin, hair. An additional major side benefit for me is that the cravings for high-glycemic-index foods and alcohol are diminishing... and I'm sleeping better. (!) ((I can also report some serendipity of meaningful coincidences, reminding me of a Celestine Prophecy lesson.) I know, so what? It's all anecdotal. But what's the downside of checking out something so inexpensive and obviously not bad for you? In this book review, though, I want to make a couple of less direct points: 1) Naura[2] is an incredible woman who's love of life and valuable insights have helped millions and 2) oldies can still be goodies. I don't mean Naura either--she's still going strong at 75--just that the advice and cures of yesteryear are often superior to prime-time prescriptions. ... It does work.

I saw the previous reviews and thought maybe mine would help provide some suggestions to make Naura's recipe and suggestions better understood.First of all, I hope people by now understand that nothing will work 100% of the time for all people. We are all different and must try different things as we go until we find what is right for our individual bodies. So with that disclaimer out of the way, here is what my experience has been. In 1989, my health was spiraling downward for no apparent reason. My energy was dropping and I was experiencing numerous symptoms that made me wonder if I was just imagining it all or just going crazy. I was trying all kinds of things and had seen doctors with no results. I came upon this book in a used bookstore and started using this shake and it totally turned things around for me within a few short days. In fact, my energy seemed to zoom up so much, one of my co-workers thought maybe I should cut back a little on the shake! Regarding the taste of the shake, here is what I did. I have never believed that artificial sweeteners are better than the real thing in terms of what is healthy for us. I know about the pros and cons of honey. It has great health benefits but must be used wisely due to it's sugar content. So as you may have guessed, I used honey in my shake as well as making sure it did sit overnight in the refrigerator. It always tasted great! I also used raw eggs from time to time and sometimes fruit such as bananas based on my own intuition about my health. To enhance the flavoring, I used additional extracts such as almond extract along with the vanilla extract. If I'm using the shake on a daily basis, I go ahead and mix up the next day's batch as soon as I have emptied the blender. My schedule is very busy and I tend to forget to mix it up if I don't do it right away.I also only mix the basic ingredients such as the milk, lecithan, yeast and oil when I'm initially making up the drink. When I take it out of the refrigerator the next morning, I then add any other ingrediants in such as the honey, fruit, eggs and sometimes fresh coconut flakes. Your own intuition about what is good for your body is much more valid than you can know. If something totally repulses you, it may be something you should avoid. Whether it's corn, milk or whatever, your body speaks to you through your own intuition about what seems good and healthy for your body. Why wait for science to catch up to what you already know? Sometimes the problem lies with pesticides, etc. So using organic products can sometimes be the only adjustment necessary. If you should decide to use the eggs, it's very important to wash the outside shell of the eggs before you break them open because of the possibility of salmonella. I use organically raised eggs and wash them well. They are available in our local grocery stores here in Colorado as well as in our local health food grocers. I don't know about availability in other parts of t

great

I bought this book in mid 70's, followed energy shake recipe for over a year, with great results! Thick lush hair and long, strong fingernails, not to mention the brain power it provides. The shake must be taken every day for best results. I've since lost the book and am looking for a copy of the recipe. HELP!!!!I am now 45 years old and know this will trim off fat and provide much energy. Naura Hayden is a loyal author, genuinely intrested in passing good health ideas to others, her research is unbelieveable!! I read another book of hers, which stated that much mental illness and depression is from lack of nutrition to the brain and body and lack of this knowledge. I wrote her a letter back in 1980, I was so excited about what her shake did for me, and she toodk the time to write me back with much encouragement. Thanks Naura!!! Somebody please help me get that book or recipe!!! IT WORKS -- DO IT!! THE POSITIVE RESULTS ARE WORTH IT!!! Use orange juice instead of low fat milk in the morning shake. It can be mixed at night with milk and refrigerated till morning, for a pudding like consistency, with a "nutty" taste. GO FOR IT!!

If you have no energy, read this book and you will!

I read this book years ago and am now ordering another copy. If nothing else, the price is worth the energy drink recipe in the book. I tried it. It tastes pretty horrible, but you get used to it, and the energy it produces is tremendous. It's a good energy, too - not jittery. Naura Hayden gives many options for improving your energy and your general health. I highly recommend the book. If you want your energy back - read this book! It will help you!
